Kwame.jpg

Kwame

Meet Kwame, the alpha male of his group, which includes two adult females—Lisa and Kate—two young juveniles—Rex and Abena—and two baby males, Uba and one who has not yet been named.

Kwame was rescued from the wild in 2018, when he was around two years old. He was brought to the Endangered Primate Breeding Centre (EPBC), where he was first placed in a social group to grow and learn.

When he turned six, about the age when wild mangabey males naturally leave their birth groups, Kwame was successfully regrouped and took on the role of alpha male. He is a calm and independent individual who often prefers quiet moments, but when it comes to protecting his family, Kwame is always watchful and ready—truly a caring and attentive leader.

Abena.jpg

Abena-Adepa

This is Abena-Adepa, a playful and curious two-year-old female.

She is the daughter of Kwame and Lisa, and the full sister of little Uba. Abena is easy to recognise by the bald spot on the top of her head—a result of frequent grooming by her stepmother, Kate.

Abena is full of energy and always up to something—whether it’s chasing her big brother Rex or gently caring for one of her two baby brothers. She is also incredibly curious; if you walk near her enclosure, don’t be surprised if she comes right up to the fence to get a better look at you!

Maya.jpg

Maya

This is Maya, a lively and curious three-year-old female.

She lives with her parents, Ape and Accra, and her little brother, Fiffi.

Her father, Ape, is the oldest alpha male at the centre, rescued from the wild in 1993. Her mother, Accra, arrived from Barcelona Zoo in 2011 to support the breeding programme.

Mama.jpg

Mama

This is Mama, a seven-year-old female and the first offspring of Annan and Ivy.

Sadly, she lost her father, Annan, in 2021. She now lives in Yaw’s group, led by the new alpha male, together with her mother, Ivy. Ivy came from Landau Zoo in Germany in 2017.

Mama is the mother of two youngsters: Chippy, a two-year-old male, and a newborn who has not yet been named. She stands out for her elegant and confident way of walking and can usually be seen with Chippy following just a few steps behind.

Peter

This is Peter, a five-year-old male and the son of Kweku and Chaachele. He lives with his parents, his stepmother, Ziggy, and his six siblings.

Among them, his closest companion is Toton. The two are often seen playing together, chasing each other around the enclosure—or sometimes their two younger baby brothers!

Like his mother, Chaachele, Peter is more of an introvert. He enjoys quiet moments on his own, often spending time eating or simply observing the world around him with calm curiosity.
