Mangabey Awareness Day 1st August

Mangabey Awareness Day (MAD) is celebrated on 1 August to increase awareness of these monkeys and primate conservation, promote conservation behaviours, and strengthen community engagement. Sporting activities, educational drama performances, and community parades are organised to engage participants and foster a sustainable coexistence between humans and primates. In Ghana’s Western Region, MAD is marked with a two-day programme involving local communities living near mangabey habitats, while zoos worldwide also join in to help raise awareness beyond Ghana.

Since 2018, West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA), in collaboration with the Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs), has spearheaded this initiative. Moving forward, we plan to expand our focus across all our landscapes, including the capital, to increase the organisation’s visibility among the upcoming generation of graduates. The project seeks to educate and inspire young people to adopt conservation behaviours, become advocates, support sustainable initiatives, and develop a greater appreciation for nature and primates. This represents a crucial step towards ensuring the survival of threatened primates and the overall health of their habitats.
